Kei cars are popular due to their low cost of ownership and maintenance as well as their eligibility for tax and insurance incentives. They’re perfectly suited to Japan’s narrow roads, high fuel prices, and urban density. Interestingly, kei cars are generally too small and specialized to be profitable for exports, though exceptions like the Suzuki Alto and Suzuki Jimny exist.
