These are early Navajo children’s wearing blankets and what’s so interesting about them is the fact we can date them by the type of yarn they’re made of. In this case, it’s cochineal dyed, raveled cloth and that places these in the late 1870s - 1880s timeframe. This is a Navajo first phase chief’s blanket and it’s one of only about 50 that exist. This piece is at @theautry and it was made by a master weaver anywhere from 1800-1850. There are subtle indigo lines and a purposeful breach of the solid white by a brown line that the weaver worked day in and day out to execute to perfection. This is something you don’t see everyday. What I have before me is a Navajo child’s blanket from the late 1800s with a lot of wear and tear. Normally, a blanket like this wouldn’t pique my interests this much. what it has is an original bayeta patch sewn into it.
