On this day in 642, Saint Máel Ruba was born in Derry, Ireland, a figure whose influence would stretch deep into the Highlands of Scotland. Educated at Bangor, he crossed the sea to Scotland in 671 with a small group of monks. For two years they travelled through Argyll and the western Highlands, spreading Christianity and establishing early churches. In 673, he settled in a remote coastal location now known as Applecross, overlooking Skye and Raasay. There he founded a monastery known in Gaelic
