The vertical resolution should be as close to the original SNES as possible (224px).

So for widescreen screen it's going to be 4:3. That's how it looked when I was a kid, that will fill more of the screen than 8:7 and to me that's the best choice. But I have an Analogue Pocket and the screen is the same dimension as a Gameboy and it turns out that the SNES will fill out more of that screen at 8:7.

Jan 17, 2021 · To completely fill the screen, one has to set the aspect ratio to 16:9 or make a custom ratio that cuts off too much of the screen. Circles become flat ovals and it's a mess. End of the day I still use Retroarch as a backup on the Snes Classic, but it doesn't bother me that some people are more comfortable with it, or they may or may not like 16:9.

The background horisontal resolution was 40. The TIA had 20 bits of memory for it so yes it was typically mirrored. But clever programming can change it midline. The five sprites effectively had a horizontal resolution of 160. So in the atari 2600 case the aspect ratio could change slightly depending on how many scanlines the programmer used.
