Apr 14, 2023 · When I watch a movie, I get soaked into the narrative, and Mulholland Drive accomplishes that from the start. It is a marvelous and ambitious genre-bending film. Everything I see that scene it startles me, not because it's scary, just so sudden.

The scare itself, though, feels pretty underwhelming. The image isn't particularly scary, and the loud noise is really the only thing that makes you react. David Lynch is better at creepy atmosphere and dread than he is at jump scares. That said, one of the 3 most effective jump scares I've ever seen is in Inland Empire.

Mulholland Drive is an excellent choice, I like how the characters basically tells you what is gonna happen and it still gets me. The Exorcist III (1990) is my pick for the best. The buildup and payoff in both are so well done. Do you have one over the other? Any other jump scares you would put in to rival those two?
