Mar 1, 2013 · After testing the NatGeo_World_Map layer above, I also tried "Canvas/World_Light_Gray_Base" and "USA_Topo_Maps". None of the 20-30 options I have tried will allow me to connect. I have downloaded the GM v14.1.6 trial, registered for two week trial, to see if a newer version would help.

When I launch Garmin's MapSource, I can now select this dataset as my background map. I would like to bring this data into Global Mapper to work with it further. In Global Mapper 13 under "Open Data File", I browsed to the directory above and chose one of the .img files. This produced the following message:

The GMP format stores any terrain as GMG (Global Mapper Grid), images as GeoTIFF (some with JPG-in-TIFF compression, but still much bigger than SID), and vector data as a special Global Mapper binary format that maintains all information and compresses pretty well.
Exporting Elevation Data to a Grayscale Height Map
This should give you a grayscale rendering of the elevation data. You'll also want to turn off hill shading on the toolbar. Then, simply use the File->Export Raster->Export PNG menu command and export a grayscale PNG file that you should be able to use. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. January 2023edited January 2023. Yes. The latest* GM has a new option in the map layout editor, under the file menu, "load element block" which will pull in a saved file that could be a title block or any other reusable content that you find useful. You can save the element blocks from the right click menu or the file menu.
