In recent years, Atkinson has explored the miniature landscapes hidden within stones. By photographing cut and polished rocks he has created an extensive collection of evocative images that look more like abstract paintings than photographs.

Currently, Atkinson works as a nature photographer, focusing on close-up photographs of stones that have been cut and polished. His 2004 book Within the Stone features a collection of his close-up photographs.

Atkinson opens a vault beneath our feet, revealing to our astonished eyes the tumult of color, form, and desire hidden “Within the Stone.” He invites us to enter the dreams of Gaia. Some of these are epiphanies so far removed from our mundane experience as to beggar ordinary language and analogy.
