Letitia Ann James (born October 18, 1958) is an American lawyer and politician serving since 2019 as the attorney general of New York (NYAG), having won the 2018 election to succeed Barbara Underwood. A member of the Democratic Party, James is the first African American and first woman to be elected New York Attorney General. [1] [2]

Attorney General James took on predatory landlords who harassed tenants and endangered children by violating New York’s lead paint laws. She protected New Yorkers’ health and the state’s natural resources by going after polluters and companies that flouted environmental protection laws.

The multi-million dollar agreement, one of the largest of its kind in New York state, also requires the companies to implement new policies to prevent any future violations and comply with oversight from the Attorney General’s Office and New York City authorities.
