Jul 31, 2005 · People have inhabited Whatcom County for nearly 12,000 years, occupying their areas for many centuries with only minor shifting. In historic times there were three tribal groups in the county: the Lummi, Nooksack, and Semiahmoo. Lummi territory included parts of the San Juan Islands and the mainland from Point Whitehorn to Chuckanut Bay.

Henry Roeder and Russell Peabody, Bellingham’s first white settlers, arrived from California in 1852 and traveled to the large Lummi village on the Nooksack River. There, Chief Chowitzit (now often spelled Chowitsut) not only gave them the falls and the land surrounding it, but promised to send some of his men to help raise the mill.

The land on which Bellingham is located was ceded to European Americans by the local Native American tribes, including the Lummi (or Lhaq'temish) people, in the controversial Treaty of Point Elliott (1855). The Lummi people continue to live in the area, many of them on Lummi Peninsula across the bay from the present-day City of Bellingham.
