South Sudan summoned Sudan’s ambassador on Wednesday to protest the alleged abuse of its citizens in Wad Madani, a city recently retaken by the Sudanese army, the South Sudanese Foreign Ministry said.

Civilians and soldiers celebrated in Wad Madani, the capital of Sudan's El Gezira state, after it was recaptured by the Sudanese army from the paramilitary Rapid Support Services, marking a possible turning point in a devastating near two-year civil war.

Addressing journalists after the summon, the Undersecretary in the South Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, John Samuel Bwogo, said they received a report from the embassy in Port Sudan that detailed some of atrocities and actions that led to the loss of lives of some South Sudanese in Wad Madani and the surrounding areas.

Sudan's army said on Saturday it had entered the central city of Wad Madani and was pushing out its paramilitary rivals the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a step which if completed successfully would be its biggest gain in nearly two years of war.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Mohamed 'Hemedti' Dagalo today acknowledged the Sudanese Armed Forces' (SAF) recapture of Wad Madani, a key city in El Gezira state that the RSF had controlled since December 2023.

The development marks one of the most significant gains for the army in its almost two-year long war with rebel forces.
