AUSTIN — Texas House lawmakers elected Republican Rep. Dustin Burrows as speaker Tuesday, shortly after the Legislature’s 89th regular session began.

Texas lawmakers have chosen the next speaker. AUSTIN (Nexstar) — Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, was voted as next Texas House Speaker after a runoff on Tuesday as the 89th legislative session kicked off Tuesday.

Burrows, and his Republican supporters, voted for some of the most conservative bills ever passed by the Texas legislature, including passing the Heartbeat Act, permitless carry of handguns, property tax relief, banning gender transition surgery for minors, and allocating more than $11 billion for border security, among other issues.

Burrow’s win was an assertion of the chamber’s longstanding independence, and it set up another session of likely clashes with the more partisan Texas Senate.
