Portuguese coach, Antonio Conceição, has broken his silence following the Nigeria Football Federation's appointment of Eric Chelle as coach of the Super Eagles.

An official statement said: “The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr. Éric Sékou Chelle as head coach of Nigeria’s senior men national football team, Super Eagles.

Chelle, who is a former coach of the Mali national team, is to lead the Super Eagles through the rest of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and, possibly, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

A recent report has detailed that Algerian club, MC Oran, has issued a new request to the NFF following the announcement of Eric Chelle as Super Eagles coach.

Eric Chelle was appointed Nigeria head coach in January 2025, but the decision was not met with widespread positivity by Super Eagles fans.

Former international, Julius Aghahowa is hopeful Eric Chelle will have a successful reign with the Super Eagles. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has come under intense criticism following their choice of the Malian for the role.

Eric Chelle's appointment as the head coach of the Super Eagles has been branded as an aberration by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
