The furniture retailer’s parent company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and says it can’t comply with “fast pay” laws during its final days. It’s not been a great year for retail chains.

Furniture retailer American Freight will close its 328 stores as parent company, Franchise Group Inc., goes bankrupt.

A national discount furniture and appliance chain is shutting down stores nationwide, including in Hampton Roads.

American Freight plans to close all of its 328 stores, including the Portage and Tinley Park locations. The discount furniture, mattress and appliance retailer has a big-box store at 6169 U.S. 6 along Portage's main commercial drag and another at 16040 S.

All 328 of the furniture store's locations will close, including one at 778 Niagara Falls Blvd., in North Tonawanda.
