A solar storm could bring the Northern Lights to Hudson Valley on New Year's Eve, but the weather might not cooperate.

These CMEs are massive clouds of plasma, which can take hours or even days to travel through the vast solar system. As per SpaceWeather.com, these CMEs are now heading towards Earth. Their arrival is expected to trigger moderate (G2) to strong geomagnetic storms (G3) on December 31-January 1.

After a bevy of solar activity, the Earth will begin the New Year with geomagnetic storms and possible displays of Aurora lights as far south as the Midwest.

That same activity can lead to aurorae, however, such as the northern and southern lights. This time around that meant that the northern lights could be seen at relatively low latitudes, including as far south as the midwest.
