Snow angels at the beach, ice skating through the streets of New Orleans, snowball fights from Houston to Florida -- Tuesday's historic winter storm certainly turned heads and broke numerous, all-time records across the southern U.

Cedrone is not alone. Many snowbirds are scrambling to sell their homes in Florida as a weak loonie and high insurance costs drive a Canadian exodus from the sunshine state.

Trump popped in to the plane’s press cabin while flying from Las Vegas to Florida, where he was staying at his Doral golf club through Monday evening, though he insisted he’d be too busy to hit the links.

The focus on American prosperity and national security is the latest pivot by Canadian officials as the country tries to find its footing with the new Trump administration, and - more urgently - avert the threat of blanket 25% import tariffs imposed by the US, its largest trade partner and closest ally.

Canadian officials are preparing retaliatory measures if the new U.S. administration imposes tariffs on Canadian imports.

It has been a light month for snow in Edmonton, so light in fact that parts of Florida have received more snowfall so far in 2025 than YEG.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE — President Donald Trump hasn’t been shy about sharing his thoughts since taking office, and he added a 20-minute Q&A with reporters aboard Air Force One to the mix. He held forth on everything from the color of the presidential plane to the fate of TikTok, Greenland and Canada.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that tariffs are coming on Canada and Mexico, despite both countries seeking to address his stated concerns about illegal border crossings and the smuggling of fentanyl. But the Republican president is also motivated by the idea that tariffs would force other countries to “respect” the United States.

Trump pledged in his inaugural address that tariffs would be coming in a speech in which he promised a golden era for America. He later said Canada and Mexico could be hit with the tariffs as soon as Feb. 1, though he signed an executive order requesting a report coordinated by the Secretary of Commerce by April. 1.

So, as the Deep South grapples with the foreign language of snowflake icons making a (for some, repeat) appearance in weather apps, a reality check is in order.

Canada’s survival faces challenges not only from the U.S., but from within: fraying internal alliances and elite detachment from economic and demographic realities.

Models are hinting at the possibility for snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets to fall from central Texas across the northern Gulf Coast into portions of northern Florida. While the setup looks favourable for snow and ice, it’s extremely hard for wintry precipitation to fall in this part of the world.
