Avalanche danger remains high in Colorado, thanks to several rounds of heavy snow that moved through the area in February. Three snowmobilers were partially buried by debris when they were caught in an avalanche north of Granby on Saturday.

The slide happened on Gravel Mountain near Grand Lake just before 2:30 p.m. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said that three or four people were caught in the avalanche, but were able to get out on their own or with the help of bystanders. It is believed to have been triggered by a snowmobile.

In a separate incident, four people caught in another avalanche escaped serious injury, Colorado officials say.

A snowboarder in Colorado's backcountry was killed in an avalanche west of Silverton on Thursday.According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, a skier and snowboarder were traveling in the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek drainage when they were caught in an avalanche in the terrain known as The Nose.

Sarah Steinwand, 41, of Crested Butte, Colorado, was caught in the debris of the avalanche in the backcountry near Silverton, but a man who was skiing with the snowboarder escaped
