Bobby McMann's 2-goal game sparks Leafs in win over Hurricanes
Bobby McMann scored two goals and Matthew Knies had a goal and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs won their third game in a row, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-1 on Thursday in Raleigh, N.C.
Panthers vs Maple Leafs: The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs meet tonight in a matchup between the bottom two teams in the Eastern Conference, with both sitting at 25 points and the Leafs having played one extra game. It is an unusual place for both clubs to be, and this game gives each side a chance to break out of a difficult stretch.
Toronto’s improved penalty killing survived minors to Matthews and Morgan Rielly, allowing no shots on the latter, but an Easton Cowan spill up ice meant Seth Jarvis got a step on him to convert on Carolina’s first goal. McMann added an empty netter.
All one can do now is hope for a swift recovery. Dennis Hildeby did a nice job of finishing the game. The Maple Leafs (13-11-3, 29 points) will try to stay hot when they face the Montreal Canadiens (14-9-3, 31 points) on Saturday, which will mark the beginning of a five-game homestand.
Bobby McMann had two assists, and Joseph Woll made 26 saves for the Maple Leafs (12-11-3), who have won three of their past four.
Head coach Craig Berube confirmed after Monday's practice that Brandon Carlo has suffered a setback in his recovery from a lower-body injury. The veteran right-shot defender has now been sidelined since Nov. 13 and flew back to Toronto to be evaluated.
Netminder Joseph Woll, who suffered a “lower-body injury,” did not return after the second intermission Thursday with the Maple Leafs leading the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 in Raleigh, N.C. The Leafs said he would not return to the game.
Toronto Star columnist Dave Feschuk joins First Up to chat about the Maple Leafs' win over the Panthers on the road, why last night was the most complete game the Leafs have played and more.
