Boom Supersonic, the American company building what promises to be the world’s fastest airliner, broke the sound barrier for its first time with a test flight in Mojave, California, on Tuesday.

Boom Supersonic made history today (Jan. 28) when its XB-1 jet broke the sound barrier for the first time.

Today, however, was the first time a commercial-type airliner, the XB-1, went supersonic since, touching Mach 1.1 in its maverick test flight out of Mojave Air And Spaceport. XB-1 first few in March 2024, with 10 more tests under its belt since - until today. The fastest of those previous flights was Mach .95, in earlier this month.
