Visitors were evacuated from the Eiffel Tower on Tuesday (December 24), after a fire alarm was set off by a short circuit in the elevator system between the second floor and the top of the tower, the management company said in a statement.

Some 1,200 people had to be evacuated from the Eiffel Tower after a fire broke out at the iconic Paris landmark. French police told local media that flames were spotted in the elevator shaft between the first and second floors.

The entire tower was closed temporarily, but access to the first two floors was quickly restored, according to Newsweek.
