A decade-old picture of a Philippine city flattened by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms ever recorded, has resurfaced in social media posts that falsely portrayed it as showing the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, nine people died when the typhoon made landfall Saturday, and at least 55 others have died during the floods and landslides that followed.

Asia's most powerful storm this year made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, the meteorological agency said, killing at least four people after tearing through China's island of Hainan and the Philippines.

Old photos from a super typhoon that hit the Philippines a decade ago have been shared by social media users in Myanmar that falsely claimed it showed the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, which slammed into several Asian countries and left more than 200 dead i 2024.

The accounting of casualties has been slow, in part due to communication difficulties with the affected areas.

Vietnam is preparing for more flooding with a tropical depression forecast to strengthen into a storm as it heads to its central coast, days after typhoon Yagi set off floods and landslides that killed more than 290 people in the north.

Typhoon Yagi, the strongest in Asia this year, has caused an estimated VND50 trillion ($2 billion) in damages to Vietnam as of Wednesday, and the figure continues to climb.
