SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — People can help provide aid to communities affected by the Los Angeles wildfires by dining at a handful of restaurants in San Diego County. Eight establishments have united for a special “Dining for Disaster Relief” campaign to raise money from select menu items to benefit the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

With parts of Los Angeles County still smoldering from wildfires, the expected rain this weekend would seem like a welcome relief. But how the rain falls could make the difference between a disaster respite or a disaster repeat.

The death toll from wildfires raging near Los Angeles has risen to 28, authorities said Tuesday, as new fires prompted evacuations near San Diego.

Mudflows prompted the closures of at least some roads, including in Topanga Canyon and on parts of the Pacific Coast Highway.

More rain fell Monday on parts of Southern California after causing mudflows over the weekend, helping firefighters but boosting the risk of toxic ash runoff in areas scorched by Los Angeles-area wildfires.

Rain brought much needed aid to the Los Angeles firefight, moving the fires surrounding the city closer to containment.

Less than an inch of rain fell in most areas, but it was enough to loosen Los Angeles hillsides burned bare by the recent blaze near the Pacific Palisades.
