Connecticut officials say the pilot of a small plane that was about to crash managed to safely land it in Long Island Sound and call 911 to report his location before he and another person were rescued.

A privately owned small plane with two people onboard crashed about six miles off the coast of Branford around 10:30 a.m. – shortly after taking off from Bridgeport Sikorsky Airport, officials said. The pilot and a passenger were rescued from the water by the U.S. Coast Guard and taken to Yale New Haven Hospital with minor injuries.

The pilot of a single-engine plane that crashed in Long Island Sound Sunday called 911 after the aircraft went down, officials said. Two people were rescued.
