The No. 1 seed prevailed over the No. 2 seed in a match ultimately decided by Zverev’s discomfort at the net, Sinner’s underrated first serve, and a kiss of death from the net.

Keys, born in Illinois and now based in Florida, is the oldest woman to become a first-time Slam champ since Flavia Pennetta, who was 33 at the 2015 US Open.

Ranked 14th and seeded 19th, the 29-year-old American upsets top-ranked two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in Melbourne
