The National Weather Service changed several of its winter weather terms in October 2024. Here is what they new terms mean.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has posted cold weather advisories and warnings with temperatures expected to plunge below zero in most of the state. The entire state is under a Cold Weather Advisory. The advisories last through Wednesday.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Something new seen this winter from the National Weather Service, are Extreme to Cold Weather Alerts. Which, are in place across the area this week.

In the Triangle, the criteria for a cold weather advisory is 5°, meanwhile, in the Sandhills, it is 10°. For an extreme cold watch or warning, the criteria is -5° in the Triangle, and 0° in the Sandhills. Watches would be issued farther in advance than warnings would be, just like with hurricanes or tornadoes.

Cold Weather Advisories and Extreme Cold Warnings will be active for southern Colorado over the next 24 hours. A Cold Weather Advisory is active until 5:00 PM Monday and will be upgraded to an Extreme Cold Warning until 11:00 AM Tuesday.
