It came into being on January 1, 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms passed in 1998. Its administrative seat and largest town is Przeworsk, which lies 36 kilometres east of the regional capital Rzeszów. The county also contains the towns of Kańczuga, lying 11 km south-west of Przeworsk, and Sieniawa, 15 km north-east of Przeworsk.
