One thing I forgot to mention about getting to Chitwan is that I very strongly recommend flying. We took a bus to arrive and our 5-6 hour journey ended up taking 12 hours. We were lucky, as we met one group of people stuck on the road for 33 hours! We couldn't risk missing our departure flight back to our home country so we decided to fly from Chitwan to Khatmandu and this was worlds better. From wheels up to wheels down was 18 minutes! The process of paying for the tickets was a bit tricky since the card reader at the airport was not working so we had to walk around until we found the the off-site building where I could pay, but it was so worth the extra money to fly and have the rest of the day in Khatmandu. There is no amount of money that could get me to take the drive from Khatmandu to Chitwan again in the future, none.

We flew to Chitwan. Cost wise, compared to a car & driver, there was little difference in price. When we were there the road was closed daily for construction and thus subject to long delays, other travelers told us the road was horrendous. The flight to Chitwan left pretty much on time, the flight back to Kathmandu was delayed by 3 hrs due to weather. The flight is less than one hour, you an use either Buddah or Yeti airlines to Bharatapur,; private planes can land on the grass runway a few miles from Chitwan. I admit the flight leaving Chitwan was scary due to the storm. The time savings, even with the delay, were huge. For us, we wanted to spend our time in Chitwan, so flying was the way to go.
