Take a shared ride service. However, be aware that Lyft's system places the dropoff and pickup places at the back of the building, not at the front entrance. Have them drop you off at the front, otherwise you'll be walking around a rather large building.
We spent between 5 and 6 hours there as we explored the grounds and the inside of the Legion of Honor. We also took many pictures including of their memorial to the Holocaust.
Saw some beautiful pictures of the outside, including a lawn and fountain and statue and all - do you have to buy a ticket to walk the outside section of the museum?

No, you don't need a ticket to enjoy the grounds and park nearby.
I would go to their website & read, they sometimes have options for special events, days, discounts etc. A few places in SF also have free homeschool days (just in case)
